Marguerite McDonald, MD is a clinical
professor of ophthalmology at Tulane University and director
of the Southern Vision Institute in New Orleans, Louisiana,
where she is a principal investigator into laser eye surgery
technologies. Prior to her current position, Dr. McDonald
was professor of ophthalmology and director of the corneal
service at the LSU Eye Center, LSU Medical Center, also in
New Orleans.
Dr. McDonald was on the head research team investigating the
use of the excimer laser for the correction of optical error.
She performed the world's first excimer PRK treatment for
both nearsighted and farsighted patients. She has become well-known
in the field of refractive surgery, with some 273 abstracts,
48 book chapters and 226 articles published on various refractive
topics. She has been the principle investigator of three National
Eye Institute grants for the study of refractive surgery,
and has been awarded a number of honors in the field, including
Summit Technology's Pioneer of Refractive Surgery Award and
an honor award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Dr. McDonald has been on the editorial board of several publications,
including the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery
and Refractive and Corneal Surgery. She is co-medical
editor of EyeWorld magazine. Her professional memberships
include: the American Association of Cataract and Refractive
Surgery, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American
College of Surgeons, the Association for Research in Vision
and Ophthalmology, the Eye Bank Association of America, the
International Corneal Laser Society and the American Medical
Women's Association.
Dr. McDonald received her medical degree from Columbia University
College of Physicians and Surgeons, followed by an internship
at Lenox Hill Hospital and ophthalmology residency at Manhattan
Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital. She then conducted a fellowship
in corneal and external diseases at the LSU Eye Center in
New Orleans.
